For their family room bar, the Malloys wanted
an antique look, but because of the location and relatively
small footprint, nothing too heavy looking or dark would be
appropriate. Working with interior designer, Karen Woods-Piazza,
we came up with a curved bar cabinet and then added a stepped
back bar, which is a base unit only with a mirror above.
The darker wood is a mixture
of Tiger maple and curly maple, stained, glazed, and lightly
distressed. For the panels and the bar top, we chose Bird's
eye maple, which was stained and glazed to give it an antique
look. Surrounding the panels we inlaid a small border of mahogany
accents.
On the splash of the back
bar, we added some diamond detailing in white maple and mahogany
accents. Over the back bar, the mirror frame was painted a
copper color, then distressed, and finally accented with van
dyke brown glazing to give it a rich patina.
A bar table with a granite
top was also commissioned to complete the triad of furniture
pieces in the bar area.
